"WRESTLE PETER PAN 2020 [DAY2]" where Yuki Ueno, who will challenge Naomi Yoshimura and KO-D tag team defense, talks about his aspirations
DDT Pro Wrestling's Yuki Ueno will participate in the KO-D tag title match with Naomi Yoshimura at "WRESTLE PETER PAN 2020 [DAY2]" on June 7th. Make a fourth defense. The challengers are #Stronghearts T-Hawk and El Lindaman, who are active not only in Japan but also overseas. We asked him about his current state of mind before the fourth defense match, which was suddenly decided a week ago.

- Initially, you had a title match with MAO and Mike Bailey scheduled for April, but the tournament itself was canceled and the title match was canceled. It was a sudden match, and your opponents are the formidable duo #StrongHearts, right?
Ueno:They quickly blended into DDT, and are "people who look bad but have a lot of freedom." Masato Tanaka, the current "KO-D Openweight Champion," gives the impression of being "an outsider who fights away from home," but #StrongHearts gives the impression of being "warriors who fight freely anywhere."
#StrongHearts' charm is that we can win against any opponent by drawing them into our style. We fought in two six-man tag matches and lost both times.
--What kind of style of wrestler do you admire? Ueno has a cool look and posture, so I think he could be an orthodox wrestler like Takeshita, or a heel like Endo, and I'm rooting for him because I think he has a lot of potential.
Ueno:Thank you. Style, you say... (thinks for a moment) I admire wrestlers who are not just strong, but who can also deliver "fun" to the audience.
When I first debuted, there was a time when I was wondering, "What do I want to do?" and "What do I want to show?"
Is it a player like Take (Konosuke Takeshita) who "puts his strength on full display," or is it a player like Endo who "pursues what he wants to do, no matter how bad it may be," or Hirata who "communicates interesting things through dance"... Everyone has an established style.
Ueno:So then I wonder, "What does that have for me...?" The fact that there are so many possibilities makes me wonder if there's no single coherent thread.
Looking at it objectively, I've come to think that rather than being a jack of all trades and master of none, which ends up with mediocre results, it might be better to go all out.
I haven't decided yet on "this style I'm going to go with," but I'm going to do "what I want to do at the time." However, #StrongHearts, who I'm going to fight next, seems to be similar to my own style.
No matter what wrestler I fight, I will match them when I need to, but I will push through my own style when I need to. I think that the mentality of pushing my own style while also accepting the opponent's style at times and trying to fight while having fun is something that I share. That's why it's difficult to fight against #StrongHearts (laughs).
-If I were to compare Ueno to music, he would be like "Mr. Children." He can entertain with up-tempo songs and move people with ballads. He has a dark side, but he can also play folk songs.
Ueno:Maybe it's because what I admire most is "people who can do anything." That's sometimes looked down upon. It's certainly cool to pursue one thing, but it's also cool to be able to do anything (laughs).
In the end, I want to be able to do anything, and being able to do anything is equal to "freedom," and I feel that "freedom" in the #StrongHearts team I'm fighting with this time. That's why I absolutely don't want to lose.
--I see, so that's what it all boils down to. By the way, your tag partner, Naoki Yoshimura, seems to have a good balance with you, Ueno.
Ueno:I feel a sense of security around Yoshimura-kun. Well, I feel too secure with him, so sometimes I run too fast and end up losing (laughs).
However, as we work together as "Nautilus," I tend to do what I want, so we've established a division of roles where Yoshimura provides me with solid support (laughs).
-Please give a message to your fans ahead of the match against the tough opponent #StrongHearts.
Ueno:Since becoming tag champions as "Nautilus," we have faced many strong opponents, and there have been many special cases where the title match has been canceled, both when we have challenged the tag champions and when we have been challenged by them.
However, we enjoy the sense of instability that other champions do not enjoy.
Our next opponent was also decided at short notice, and it's a terrifyingly strong opponent. We've lost to #StrongHearts in all our previous matches, but we're looking forward to the championship match, so please enjoy our battle with Nautilus from home!
