HALF TIME CONFERENCE 2020 ~ Sports Business Conference Thinking about the Future of the Japanese Sports World ~

As introduced in the previous article (http://king-gear.com/articles/1240), the HALF TIME Conference 2020 was held online. As the title suggests, the content was very forward-looking, thinking about the future. I will introduce an excerpt from the story that left an impression on me.

Sit in front of your computer at home. It is a strange feeling that people in various places, both in Japan and overseas, are connected online.

First is the opening speech by Yusuke Isoda, the representative of HALF TIME Co., Ltd.

Isoda: First of all, in the midst of the difficult situation of the coronavirus, our company also made various changes at this conference.

In such a situation, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who took the stage, everyone who became a sponsor, and everyone who listened deeply to the lecture.

We have received over 450 applications this year.
For those of you who don't know who we are, let me explain about HALF TIME Co., Ltd.

We provide IT services specialized in the sports industry. It is still a venture company that has been released for about 10 months.

Our mission is to create new value for organizations and individuals around the world through sports, and to realize a society full of meaning in life.

I have been involved in sports since I was a child, and I believe that sports should be valued more.

Through playing sports in childhood, they naturally make friends and develop their personalities, and even the best business executives see World Cup matches and are overjoyed and sometimes shed tears. I believe that such content is hard to find outside of sports.

We will further increase the value of sports, bring people around the world closer to sports, and live a meaningful life through sports. I would like to realize such a society.

Although the world is currently in a difficult situation due to the new coronavirus, we would like to do our best to do what we can without forgetting our gratitude to the medical workers and our gratitude for being healthy. I think.

And I believe that eventually a society will come where people will think, "After all, sports are good." Let's do what we can do now together!

This was followed by a keynote speech by Mr. Yoshito Hori (President of Globis School of Management/Director and Owner of Ibaraki Robots). The title is "A New Future Opened Up by Sports Management". I would like to share an excerpt from Mr. Hori's speech that left an impression on me.

The Ibaraki Robots' 2019-2020 season was suspended after 47 out of 60 games due to the coronavirus.

Ibaraki Robots acquired Ibaraki Broadcasting under its umbrella, and this season was truly a fusion of professional sports and media. In the past, media often had sports teams.

The Yomiuri Shimbun Group had the Giants, and the Chunichi Shimbun had the Dragons.

Due to the impact of COVID-19, it is necessary to think on the premise that earnings will remain flat or shrink in the next fiscal year. The flow of “investment ⇒ team strengthening ⇒ growth”, which was the rule until now, can no longer be expected.

We need to think about how the team can survive and how we can survive before the corona storm blows over.

When the possibility of not being able to hold a real event increases, we have to raise sales in a different way.

Specifically, I make videos with Ibaraki Broadcasting, sell online content, and run a cafe called BLUE x BLUE, where we have started takeout and delivery. (This is very popular.)

All the gymnasiums are closed, so I can't do school business, but I'm doing an online school. (Dribbles, sit-ups, dances, etc. that can be done at home are held at an online school)

Mr. Hori believes that it will be necessary to change the game in order to survive, and to have the resilience to generate profits in different ways even in the face of the corona situation. He ended the keynote speech with positive words.

Sessions 1 to 4 were then held. Include a message that resonates with you.

Session 1 "Future Next-Generation Club Management and Effective Sponsorship" was held. The following are the speakers.

Mr. Kiyofumi Tamiaki (President and Chief Executive Officer, Molten Co., Ltd.)

Mr. Oliver Takahashi (General Manager of Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Coca-Cola Japan Co., Ltd.)

Mr. Shingo Okamura (DeNA Co., Ltd. Director, COO and General Manager of Sports Business Headquarters)

Haruna Takada (Director of Japanet Holdings Co., Ltd. / President of V-Varen Nagasaki Co., Ltd.)

[Moderator] Seiya Oura (Persol Career Co., Ltd. Executive Officer doda Agent Business Manager doda Editor-in-Chief)

I would like to excerpt from Mr. Okamura's interesting talk about "professional sports x place".

Okamura: Yokohama City Hall is adjacent to Yokohama Stadium, but the city hall will be relocated.

DeNA will develop the former site of the city hall together with Mitsui Fudosan. We are talking about how the team will create an urban space.

We will create everything from professional sports so far to designing urban spaces.

In that case, I think we can create a combination of "baseball and stadium" and another combination of "basketball and arena".

For Kawasaki Brave Thunders, we haven't made it yet, but if possible, we would like to make an arena in a form that suits the city of Kawasaki. If you have an arena, you can create a bustle for 365 days, not just for 30 or so games a year.

Actually, I would like to do this kind of combination in Yokohama, Kawasaki, and if possible, soccer.

Soccer is also soccer, stadiums and their regions. Depending on whether the area is an urban area or a rural area, the characteristics will change again.

I think that we can create various combinations and cultures of sports by “professional sports x place”, and I think that coordinating it will be the key to our business.

Session 2 "Value and Legacy of Mega Sporting Events"

Mr. Yuki Ota (President of Japan Fencing Association / Vice President of International Fencing Federation)

Mr. Tadahiro Nomura (Judoist / Tokyo 2020 Torch Relay Official Ambassador)

Keita Suzuki (former professional soccer player / CEO of AuB Inc.)

Takayuki Hioki (CEO of Sports Branding Japan)

[Moderator] Yusuke Isoda (Representative Director, HALF TIME Co., Ltd.)

I would like to introduce the following two stories Mr. Ota said that struck a chord with me.

・Do fencing players also use SNS?

Ota: It's not a physical thing, but a verbalization of what you've learned through the competition. I think we have to keep outputting. Mr. (Tadahiro) Nomura gives lectures 100 to 200 times a year, so I think he will definitely improve his verbalization.

SNS is also a place of output, and I think that SNS will be a good place for training how to abstract what you have learned in the competition and output it to the general public.

I think that SNS is necessary to output, so I instruct the players to do as much as possible.

・ Now is the time for minor sports players to send out

Ota: Right now, we have too much sports news. Normally, I wouldn't spend 15 minutes on a feature like this, but I'm using 15 to 20 minutes. When you see that kind of thing, you should send it to minor athletes now.

For example, how many times has a video of canoeist Haneda practicing paddles in the bathroom aired on the airwaves? How many times has the video of Daiya Seto swimming in a pool been streamed?

Anyone should be able to do that by imagining an idea and an output on the PR side of how it will be received by those around them.

Whether it's fencing or, for example, sticks, it doesn't matter. It's a buzz thing, so it may be temporary, but I think it's effective to grab a certain number of first fans, so now is the time to set it up.

With the feeling of setting up every day, I would like to gain my own fans and get out of it, including financially.

All the players, everyone who supports the players, please do your best!

Sessions 3 and 4 followed. Sessions 3 and 4 were in English with guests from overseas (simultaneous interpretation available).

It is only online that sessions can be held while in each country. It's been a long time, so I'm going to give you a brief introduction to this session.

The following is an impressive story.

・How can we face supporters and sponsors around the world while we are unable to practice or play due to the influence of Corona? ⇒We have to publicize and communicate in a different way than before, such as using online.

A forward-looking story was developed that along with the need to respond to the new normal in the future, there are also opportunities lurking there.

Session 3 "The Cutting Edge of the Global Sports Business of Spanish Clubs"

Alex Wicks (Real Madrid CF Director of Global Partnership Creation)

Toni Claveria (FC Barcelona Head of APAC)

Carlos Arranz, Commercial and Marketing Director, Real Zaragoza

[Moderator] Mr. Takehiko Nakamura (CEO of Blue United Corporation)

Session 4 "Japanese and Asian Markets Seen from European Football Clubs and Leagues"

Hadrien Perazzini (Arsenal FC Director, APAC)

Suresh Letchmanan (Borussia Dortmund Managing Director, APAC)

Mr. Ivan Codina (La Liga Managing Director, SEA - Japan, S.Korea & Australia)

[Moderator] Mr. Kunihito Morimura (President and CEO of Dentsu Sports Asia)

People involved in sports both in Japan and overseas were on stage, but what they had in common was the attitude of "rather than looking for reasons why we can't do it, we should positively seek out what we can do in this current environment."

Although it was in the form of no spectators on May 16, the Bundesliga in Germany has resumed, and the daily life of sports is returning little by little.

I also heard that HALF TIME Co., Ltd. is planning to hold a similar online conference in June. I can't wait to see what kind of hot story will be unfolded next time.
