Judo is said to have started in 1882 when Jigoro Kana embarked on teaching martial arts based on jiu-jitsu at Eijiji Temple in Tokyo. Japanese representative of Japanese traditional sports judo continues to fight against the world wearing Mizuno's judo clothing. This time, Mr. Uemura, who is involved in the planning and development of judo clothing at Mizuno Co., Ltd. (President and CEO: Akito Mizuno), told about development struggle.

ミズノは、1964年 東京オリンピック以降に柔道衣の開発をスタートさせ、1970年代に入ると、今の柔道衣に繋がる開発を本格化させた。

- On Mizuno's judo clothes
Uemura: Mizuno began making judo clothes from the 1980 's. At that time the material was cotton, the rules of judo were strict year by year, and we are developing products accordingly.
The current one is designed to be lightweight, very easy to move, aiming not to give burden to players as much as possible.
- Judo cloth worn by Japanese national team
Uemura：ミズノは、日本代表用の柔道衣を扱っていますので、選手や指導者の方に多くのヒアリングを行い、徹底して開発に取り組んできました。そこが我々の強みであると思っています。
The top model of this time took a very long time to develop the material. In traditional rules, only cotton material could be used. By revising the rules, chemical fiber can also be used, and I thought about how to make use of chemical fiber well.
Players strongly grasp the judo garment by hand during the game, so I paid close attention so that the feeling will not change. It was very difficult to get this balance. I wanted more time and it was really hard.
- Things that can be done while judo rules are tough
Uemura: It is limited that the rules can be freely done with stricter rules. The International Judo Federation is aiming for Judo to make it easier to set up during the game, not Judo to escape, but to take one offensive aggressively. With such things, it was not a judo clothing that was hard to catch, but in a form that made it easy to fit easily, we were able to make a light judo garment that is very easy to move. There were some judoists who said they wanted to wear judo clothes that they were easy to grasp and difficult to catch (laugh).
There were a lot of voices that pants are better for those that are easy to move and not thick. It becomes difficult to move even if it is too thin. Thicker makes it easier to move, but it also becomes easy to catch, it also makes it too difficult to move because it is rattling too much. So, I designed it while taking a good balance.
Although throwing skills do not have much damage to judo clothing, sleeping skills are burdensome to judo clothes. It is something that is not stressful to the players.
- Future Prospects
Uemura: While there are rules, I would like to challenge Mizuno to evolve.
