- Teachers who influenced Mr. Sawano

Sawano: There are people who gave power at various turning points. First of all, Professor Iwai of the junior high school who recommended pole vaulting, Professor Koshikawa who taught the foundation of athletics at Narita High School, Professor Takita who was conscious of aiming at the world, Japan that I am teaching variously now I am a director of the university sports science department and the encounter with Professor Oyama of Nihon University athletics department director is very big for me.

Because I am blessed with people at the point point, I still continue to compete in this kind of position and I can leave results at every competition. I am absolutely impossible alone, and I am full of gratitude.

――Try out at the Olympic Games

Sawano: The first time I went to a dream Olympic was the 2004 Athens Games. At this time my physical condition was really good, and I was pleased at the warming-up place that I could move like this at the Olympics!Approximately 50,000 people were full at the game day on the day of the match, full of cheers, I felt that sound is energy, I cried extremely. "Oh, this is like the Olympic Games."

The game itself was trying hard and desperately, finally passed the qualifying but at the time of the final which greeted with the first day hardly any power remained, the result was 13th with 5m 55cm.

- Difference from world top class

Sawano: Two Americans who are fighting gold medals, I saw the fight between Tobey Stevenson and Timothy Mc, and I felt that "I am the same Olympic finalist but I am not on the same stage yet".

After that I noticed not only participating in the Olympics but also seriously wanting to fight equally in the world stage. I want to be able to give pressure by bargaining with other players on this stage.

- First prize at the Olympic Games, and now

Sawano: At the 2nd 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the Achilles tendon was unable to demonstrate the power that I thought would hurt and I was defeated qualifying.Although I was injured I was very regrettled that I could not fully demonstrate my power, and I worked hard for four years towards London. However, at the Japanese championship which also served as a selection for the London Olympic athletes, they were defeated at a close margin and could not become a representative.

At the age of 32 then
When considering things, I did not go to the Olympic Games anymore but I had no choice inside of me, so I will challenge at the age of 36, but thinking "Let's aim for Rio" I worked hard for 4 years. The result will be the 7th place prize at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

I was able to challenge with the Rio Olympic Games in a very good condition with both mind and body, and I was able to leave the best result in the competition life so far. Actually, although I thought I would retire even if I go out to Rio Olympics, I was going to retire, but thanks to the results of Rio, I am very pleased with the people who support me and I am very happy I got used to it. Because there was no painful place and it was technically good condition, I want to continue with nature, I feel like I want to jump, but I am still working continuously.

Currently, when doing athletics, I am indebted to Fujitsu. After Rio, Fujitsu told me, "If Sawano wants to continue, please continue." There is no such happiness. I do not know what will happen in my future life, I think that there is meaning to keep going on, and I thank you for preparing the environment more than anything else.

- As instructor and leader of Nihon University

Sawano: Currently I work as a lecturer at Nihon University. As a faculty member, I still want to become a solid teacher while studying hard every day.

As a leader there is a feeling that I would like to tell the pole vault that I've come up to future generations and give back to the land world. I'd like to tell you that I have had many valuable experiences as a pole vault player in Japan. I think there is absolutely no way that I can be told by my continued active duty, and it should have something different from telling it after I quit.

Nevertheless, it is also an honest point that I can not say "I am going to Tokyo! Because there are few Japanese athletes who are 40 years old at the Olympic Games. The world is progressing towards the Tokyo Olympic Games, and it is exciting. I am trying various things every year for 1 year, keep on trying hard while discovering new things, and think that it would be better to connect to the Tokyo Olympic Games as a result.

- Charm as a leader

Sawano: It is interesting that guided guys change. Movement changes while teaching, and there is a moment when a player grasps a sense and a knack. However, since they are not transmitted to players only by my words, I will be pleased myself if I draw out from various angles and tell me the moment of movement that I noticed and the face of the athlete "I made it! . They grow even stronger, they will also stimulate me.

If you win prizes from the students at the Olympics and win medals, people around them will be delighted and I think that it is happy for the players themselves.

- Future Prospects

Sawano: I think that as a competitor who holds a Japanese record by pole vaulting, I would like to wear unshakable education. And I still want to meet various people, so I will take my legs firmly on the ground while cherishing their edges and sending it. It is opposite to pole vaulting, but (laugh).

――Finally, Sawano asked questions

"In pole vaulting, what do you think is the most important?

Author: I think that it is a place to put a pole.
