Land spikes for fighting Sprinter in the world! What is Mizuno "Chronoinx".
A short-distance onshore spike "Chronoinx" series that made it possible for Japan's top sprinter to run at high speed against the world. This time, Mr. Kono who is engaged in the planning and development of the land spike for many years at Mizuno Corporation (President: Akito Mizuno) talked about birth privacy, function and future prospects.

Mr. Mitsuhiro Kono
- The origin of the name of the spike
Kono: This "Chronoinx" is a spike used by the top athlete, and since the completion form was completed in 2000, almost the same thing has been adopted for more than 17 years.
First of all, since the short distance run is a sport competing for a short time, we chose to attach "Chrono" to the name in association with the chronograph and chronometer. And then, at that time, International Express (International Super Express) came up, imagining the image that Mizuno contracted players competing in the world, and we abbreviated it as "Ink". Finally, "Chrono" and "Ink" together are called "Chronoins".
- Features of "Chronoinx"
Kono: The sole for short range is made of hard nylon plate, it is highly resilient and prevents twisting. This makes the movement of the foot smoother because there is twisting back of the plate when running at high speed. Because this twisting back force is strong, there is a risk of getting hurt unless it is a player with solid muscle strength. "Chronoinsku" is recommended to the top athletes who forged.
It shone in silver at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic 4 × 100 m relay and also appeared in 200 metersShota Iizuka 's model "Chrono Onyx" contains a carbon sheet, which is designed to be harder.

――Position of spike pin
Kono: In 1996 I studied the shape and movement of the foot of the contract athletes thoroughly using analysis equipment. Then, considering the structure of the bone of the foot, when the mother's ball, the small toe ball, the toe arrive at the ground it is attached to the position where the spike pin sticks firmly. Only the top athletes have short leg contact time, so we have spike pins so that their feet roll smoothly.
Until then, the position of the spike pin was decided by listening to the player's feelings, but based on the results of the analysis, we were able to develop while making proposals. Later, analysis results have evolved due to the emergence of high-speed cameras and motion capture. I can't assume that the position of the bone will change, so I think the position of the spike pin will not change in the future.
- About the heel
Kono:For short distance players basically the heel does not arrive at the ground so we make it a simple shape that does not assume grounding. Japanese athletes have been influenced by overseas guidance, and the forefoot traveling method, which runs on the ground with the toe as the center, is mainstream.
After that, when the toes were grounded, the burden on the legs was high in the latter half of the race, so the midfoot driving method came out that it is better to get the feet naturally flat. This means that you will raise your toes slightly to run over long distances, reach a sole in a flat state, and shorten the time it takes for the heels to arrive and make use of the repulsive force received from the ground and move forward.
Today, there are the above two methods of driving, Chronoinx is mainly for the forefoot running method which runs on the ground with toes and is a spike designed for strong muscular athletes.
- About strings and straps
Kono: The string uses heavy-duty thread for explosion-proof sheet that covers so that the rock does not splash when exploding dynamite on the mountain. It is a very light and strong shoe lace, you can keep the firmness that will not shake once you tighten it. In Mizuno, it is adopted only for onshore spikes, and we are thoroughly pursuing the lightness to reduce the burden on the legs and run fast. In addition, adopting a strap that is easy to fit, the structure has a high fitness of the heel and holdability around the instep.
- About shoes design
Kono:The angle of the sole is larger compared to other competitions. It is designed for the forefoot running method which makes it possible to smoothly ground from the toes and not subject to brakes.
- Future Prospects
Kono: Track and field is a sport with results depending on the athlete's running ability.% Is the player's ability, and the remaining 5% is due to spikes. In the future, I would like to make this 5% with all of my life and soul. (End)
