Breath thermo absorbs a trace amount of moisture that is constantly diverged from the human skin and heats up by heating to keep the dry state, Mizuno becomes a moisture absorbing and heating fiber boasting worldwide. This time, Mr. Atsushi Shiraishi who is in charge of development of Mizuno Co., Ltd. (President and CEO: Akito Mizuno) talked about the birth story of Breath Thermo.

ほ乳類や鳥類の毛皮や羽毛は、水分を吸って熱を出し保温する事が知られていた。そこで、新しい保温素材を探し求めていた1人のミズノの開発者が、その保温メカニズムに着目し、吸湿発熱する化学繊維を開発した。  

That is a breath thermo.

1992年、当時、ウール以上に発熱する素材は世の中に存在しなく、あるメーカーからミズノに乾燥剤が売り込まれ、試しに水をかけてみると発熱したことからすぐに研究開発が始まった。

- How was Breath Thermo born?

White stone: To provide customers with real warmth is one mission, so we were studying whether different approaches could be done in various plans, such as storing heat and therefore absorbing sunlight.

In that case, sheep wool has the knowledge that it absorbs moisture and generates heat, there is a large amount of calorific value than the wool material, and it is the beginning of the thing to develop what impacts the world.
 

――開発は上手く進みましたか。  

White stone: When I was looking for ingredients, a maker appeared that made desiccant fibrous.There were two major problems in developing, but I managed to overcome it somehow.

――どのような問題となりますか。  

White stone: First of all,
① The desiccant is not for clothing.
② It is not strong and can not be threaded.
③ It is difficult to dye the color uniformly.
It was that.
 

Breath thermo was pink at the stage of raw materials, it was very difficult to dye to other colors. ThatBy the way, it was only possible to make products that stuffed with cotton and so on, so I could not extend the lineup for clothes, so I made a trial and error with the spinning maker. It became a thready thing, and even if I knit it, it was soon weak because its strength was weak.

Although it looks like a thread, it is not uniform and there are thick parts and thin parts, so they can not be knitted at all. Because Breath Thermo himself is a nature to generate heat from sucking moisture, as the moisture is sucked, the nature of the thread changed and it was serious, but somehow it came to knitting.
 

Thereafter, although there was dyeing of the fabric, because the color does not stain, the polyester that is combined together also turns into strange colors. It took a considerable amount of time to color matching, finally the fabric was finished in 1997 and the underwear was completed. 

――もう1つの問題とは、どういったことでしょうか。  

White stone: It will be marketing. Currently, we are the top share in terms of outdoor underwear, but as a new manufacturer into the outdoor industry, we were in a weaker position than the old outdoor makers. And since the cotton and thread of Breath Thermo was special, it became a very expensive thing (laugh).

- How much was the price?


White stone: It was about 5,000 yen per trip (laugh). Because the appearance is not good and it is weak to the outdoors, no one seems to be looking in the office, no one said "Can you sell?" Some people who understand the functionality are great, some first thousand arrivals I was sold out immediately at the test sale.

――すばらしいですね。こちらがブレスサーモとなりますか。

White stone: We made several kinds of lineup, changed the thickness of the fabric, and sold it, we reached 2 million pieces by around 2005. By the way, the calorific value of Breath Thermo is far higher than wool and rayon.

Currently, we are also developing for consumers while gaining credit in the sports market. We develop not only underwear but also many items. Besides underwear, there are T-shirts, downwear, pants and futon.
 

――他に特長はありますか。  

White stone: Durable and warm, with high deodorant capability, comfortable for outdoor sports sports long time, it is very smooth at all times and very gentle to the skin. I think that it is only Mizuno's breath thermo that has the functions so far. 

――これからの冬にブレスサーモは欠かせませんね。   最後に。今後の展望を教えていただけますか。  

White stone当初はアウトドア商品が中心でしたが、各種競技スポーツ、一般の生活シーンでも機能性のメリットがある素材のため、様々なシーンに対応できるブレスサーモ製品を展開している状況で、今後も更に拡大させる方向です。ありがとうございました。     

一般的にアパレルメーカーでは、衣服にできない乾燥剤などの素材は採用から外れてしまうが、ミズノはお客様に素晴らしいものを提供すべく、ポテンシャルの高さに注目をして研究開発を続けている。
