――本田さんは経営者、JリーグOB会の業務以外にも、指導者をされていますよね。

2017年の４月からは、偉大な大先輩である釜本邦茂さんから依頼があり、都内の高校サッカー部でも週１のみですがコーチとして就任しました。

――指導者として、どのようなことを心掛けていますか？
Honda：I see a lot of leaders, but I do not try to make the best of my child, I try to stretch it, I seem to stop growing.

Honda：試合に勝ちたいからと言って、チームで一番足が速くて上手で、攻撃が得意な子をDFにすれば失点をせず、負けにくくはなりますが「育成の段階で、それはどうなのかな？」と思います。僕は子供には、楽しみながら長所を伸ばしていく指導をしたいです。
――本田さんは飲食の事業もされていますが、子供たちに食事のアドバイスをすることはありますか？
Honda：In the past I was made to eat a quantity anyhow, but now I have many children who can not eat a lot, so I also do diet education. Once a month, I have a licensed nutritionist and trainer calling me to talk.
Meals are very important. "Let's eat something you like, whatever it is," but I can not quite say, "Let's eat protein and carbohydrates on the day before the game or this day."
親にも準備がありますから。夏場になると食べられない子が多く、そう麺やざるそばを持ってきたのには困りましたね。
――それだと試合で力が出ませんね。

――鹿島では、本田さんと同時期にプレーした石井正忠さんが、監督として活躍されていますね。
Honda：石井さんはチームを強くし、去年はクラブワールドカップでレアル・マドリードと死闘を繰り広げました。アントラーズの人たちはジーコから「監督、スタッフ、選手と互いにリスペクトをするように」と教わり、確実に結果を出していると思います。今年もどこまでやってくれるのか。楽しみでなりません。
――今後、やりたいことはありますか？
Honda：いまは育成が楽しいので、未来のＪリーガーや日本代表を育てていきたいです。その上でGMが出来たら嬉しいです。クラブの内部に入らないとわからない事だらけだと思いますが、予算の中で強化費がどれぐらいなのかとか、GMに関する色んな話を聞いたりして、勉強を続けています。オファーはないので、自分から売り込んでGMになれればと思っています。
――その姿勢が素晴らしいですね。

――インタビューの最後に、改めてスパイクへのこだわりを聞かせてください。本田さんはアディダスと契約されていて、子供の頃はアディダスの取替式のスパイクを大事に履いていたそうですが、現代のスパイクについて、どう思いますか？
