Watanabe: When I went to give the Mongolian Under-16 female athletes the spikes from various manufacturers that Moriyama Sports had given them, they were fighting over Asics spikes. It was very popular.
In that case, I thought that if I offered them ASICS spikes, which are not available in Mongolia, they would be happy. Moriyama Sports asked ASICS for cooperation, and this project was made possible.
--That's a wonderful initiative. What made you decide to take on this initiative?
Watanabe: I thought about the current situation in Mongolia, a country that still has poor logistics.
The match between the Mongolian national team and the Japanese national team was decided on the day I arrived in Mongolia.
A raffle was held on that day. When I got off the plane, I was surprised. That's when I thought of this. I have no choice but to take advantage of this opportunity. I thought this is what I should do.
Asashoryu is also present at this venue today. I would be happy if I could burn it into his eyes as well.
Even this is beyond the limits of my ability. At Saitama Stadium, the best pitch, I wanted to express my gratitude to Mongolia for the past three years.
